Can HBO's House of the Dragon live up to our expectations?

Finally, the moment every Game of Thrones fan has been waiting for is here, House of the Dragons premiered and it started with a bang. Yes, the season premiere of House of Dragon created history and became the most watched season premiere in HBO’s history. But how many views did the first episode get? The first episode of House of Dragon got nearly 10 million views on the opening night, and there is no doubt in my mind that the numbers will only go up from here.

The Game of Thrones franchise is no stranger to huge numbers. The series finale garnered more than 19 million on the first night. After taking into account the delayed views HBO estimated that around 46 million have seen the finale. There is no doubt Game of Thrones is HBO’s Belle of the ball, and they surely have high hopes with the new Game of Thrones prequel.

But many have not seen the entire Game of Thrones or maybe never started the series. If you are one of those you might wanna skip this show. After all, you do not know the lore or the characters. So how can you enjoy House of the Dragon? You have nothing to worry about, House of the Dragon is the prequel to Game of Thrones and you do not need any experience with the GOT universe to enjoy House of the Dragon.

The show has certainly stuck with the winning formula of planning, plotting, and backstabbing that has worked so well in Game of Thrones. I certainly developed trust issues after watching GOT and I feel like House of the Dragon will be no different. But again not knowing what’s gonna happen next, who’s gonna betray who was all the fun. The unpredictable nature of Game of Thrones is what sets it apart. Not knowing what is gonna unfold next is what so many of us fell in love with.

House of the Dragon undoubtedly has very big shoes to fill, and that might be the reason behind the bold approach the show had so far. House of the Dragon follows the event after one year of the queen’s horrifying demise. Speaking of the queen, I hope you folks have recovered from the childbirth scene. And the show is filled with “what were you thinking!” moments. The men of the HOTD universe surely need to stop taking horrible decisions. But from men and their “not-so-genius” decisions, another problem with the show is how the women are portrayed.

The middle-ages were not so great for women, and the show’s ambition of portraying realistic conditions has definitely taken a dark turn. There are many instances on the show that are really hard to swallow. The vile misogyny portrayed in the show to “keep it real” might turn off many from the show. But it’s too early to predict anything really. If one thing I have learned after watching GOT is, that you never know where the story will go. I am hoping moving forward will show efforts to dismantle misogyny in those dark times.

The show may move forward in several ways but there is absolutely no doubt there is massive hype behind the show. The hype is at that level that many fans are crossovers and spin-offs of their own. One fine crossover that caught my eye was The Witcher crossover. Artist BossLogic took to Twitter to share a fanart. The fanart had Geralt of Rivia in the House of the Dragon. But its caption was the best in my opinion. The caption BossLogic used was “ The hair checks out” pointing out the iconic white hair of Geralt of Rivia. Well, we all have the golden head in the GOT world.

With a record-breaking start, the show certainly had a great start. With 10 episodes in the season, we have yet to see if the show can live up to the expectations. If you didn’t know a new episode will drop every Monday. So let us know in the comments how excited you are for the brand new House of the Dragon.
