How Does the House of the Dragon tie back to Game of Thrones?

The history of the Targaryens helps set the stage for the world of the Game of Thrones series. It shows why the Targaryens are feared and why the other important families in Westeros also look down on outsiders. After all, the family did invade and take control of most of the land. And, well, you know. On the other hand, much of Daenerys' character can be better understood by looking at the conflict in House of the Dragon, and maybe we can forgive her for some of the decisions and actions she made in her last arc on the show.

In 2019, Season 8 was the last episode of Game of Thrones. For almost a decade, the show's many plot twists kept fans interested. The ending was slammed by everyone because it seemed like the show had forgotten about plot points from the previous seasons and was very rushed. Still, a prequel series called "House of the Dragon" might be able to heal those old wounds. The new series is about the Targaryen family and takes place about two hundred years before the first one.

People say that the War, which became known as the Dance of the Dragons, was one of the most interesting and bloody times in the history of the dynasty. After the death of King Viserys I Targaryen, dynastic battles are once again at the center of all the fighting (played by Paddy Considine in the show). He only has one living daughter from his first wife, Rhaenyra Targaryen, and four from his second, so you can guess what will happen next. Rhaenyra was named his successor while he was still alive, but now that he has died, there is a lot of disagreement about this tricky matter. Will she get the throne because she is the oldest, or will it go to Aegon, the first male heir? Nothing will be settled in a calm way. Things are about to get out of hand, and the dragons are ready to burn everything they see if they have to.

Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, was the main character of Game of Thrones. For eight seasons, we watched as she went from being a shy woman to a fiery queen, the mother of dragons, who fell victim to the Targaryen madness for which the House was known. During Robert Baratheon's rebellion, King Aerys II Targaryen and Queen Raella had their last child, Daenerys. After Robert took the throne, the Targaryens were kicked out, and the first series was about Daenerys' mission to bring back her family's name.

The story of Game of Thrones started when she married Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa). After he died, she started to expand her empire into Essos. After freeing the Unsullied from their masters, she won their loyalty. But as the show went on, she became meaner and meaner, and in the end, she destroyed King's Landing to take power from Queen Cersei (Lena Headey). In the end, Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) killed her to stop more massacres.

The Targaryen family tree is very complicated because there has been a lot of incest and breeding within the dynasty. In House of the Dragon, we meet King Viserys I, who is the king of Westeros and the father of the main character, Rhaenyra, as well as the brother of her rival, Daemon. But in the first series, Viserys was also the name of Daenerys' brother and great-grandfather. In the book, Rhaenyra marries her uncle Daemon and has a child who claims the Iron Throne. This is a very interesting plot point. So it turns out that Rhaenyra and Daemon are not only Rhaenyra and Daemon's distant nieces, but they might also be Daenerys's distant grandparents. This would also make Rhaenyra Daemon's distant cousin since Daemon is Rhaenyra's uncle and also her husband. And you thought things were bad in your family.

Game of Thrones starts when Jaime Lannister, the king's guard, kills King Aerys II. Aerys, who is known as the Mad King, had three children. Their names were Rhaegar, Viserys, and Daenerys.

Daenerys was the only true heir to the throne until it was discovered that she was actually Jon Snow's aunt (a plot twist that no one saw coming). In Game of Thrones, the Targaryens lost their throne, but in House of the Dragon, they will rule over the Seven Kingdoms for a long time.
