Taylor Swift’s ‘Tortured Poets Department’ Album Title Is a Dig at Joe Alwyn

Six years after their highly publicized relationship began, Taylor Swift and actor Joe Alwyn reportedly parted ways in early 2023. Now, following her Grammy win, Swift has announced her eleventh studio album titled "The Tortured Poets Department," arriving on April 19th. Her fans are convinced her new album title indicates she's about to tell all about her breakup with Joe Alwyn.

On Sunday night, Taylor Swift won her 13th Grammy Award in the Best Pop Vocal Album category for Midnights, and during her acceptance speech, she announced she has a brand new album coming out.  While Swift’s fans were highly expecting her to announce her fifth re-recorded album, Reputation (Taylor’s Version), the pop star shocked everyone by revealing a new project, her eleventh studio album.

She said “My brand-new album comes out April 19th, it’s called The Tortured Poets Department. I’m going to go and post the cover right now backstage.” While kicking off the next leg of the Eras Tour in Tokyo on Wednesday, Swift gave little detail on the work she'd put into the album.

"I’ve been working on Tortured Poets since right after I turned in Midnights," she told the audience. "I’ve been working on it for about two years. I worked on it throughout the US tour. Soon we’ll get to hear it together.”

While the title of the new Taylor Swift album and accompanying lyrics hint at emotional themes, details about the album's content and inspiration remain officially unconfirmed.

After her acceptance speech at the Grammys on Sunday, Swift then uploaded a picture of the album cover along with a photo of lyrics that read: “And so I enter into evidence / My tarnished coat of arms / My muses, acquired like bruises / My talismans and charms / The tick, / tick, / tick, / of love bombs, / my veins of pitch black ink.” The image was signed by “The Chairman of the Tortured Poets Department”.

Following Taylor Swift's intriguing album announcement with the cryptic title "The Tortured Poets Department," fans across platforms have gone into overdrive with speculation.

The album's name, coupled with the revelation of a "Tortured Man Club" WhatsApp group shared by Joe Alwyn and other actors, has fueled theories about the album's potential themes and inspiration. While some believe the record might be a scathing tell-all about their recent breakup, others remain cautiously optimistic, excited to see what new artistic direction Swift takes.

One user boldly declared, "THIS IS THE BREAKUP ALBUM," while another ominously warned Alwyn, "I hope he still has that group chat. I feel like he's gonna need it." Some even predicted he'd become "the most hated man in America" upon the album's release. It’s worth highlighting that this isn't the first time Swift has woven past relationships into her songwriting. Fans can readily recall "Forever and Always," a scathing track inspired by her abrupt phone call breakup with Joe Jonas.

But now that there is speculation that Swift’s ‘Tortured Poets Department’ Album is connected with her ex Joe Alwyn, many sure be curious to know the reason why the two broke in the first place.

Why did Taylor and Joe Break Up

So it all began with an anonymous source of Entertainment Tonight who is close to the couple sharing details of their breakup. According to the details shared by the insider, Taylor and Joe’s breakup was not dramatic.

In summation, the source told ET that their relationship “had just run its course.” Many sources suggested that it was Taylor who initiated the breakup, as per the sources, the Midnight singer took the decision because both of them were in different places in their lives. Their break up after a 6-year relationship is just an example of how sometimes you spend a lot of time with someone only to realize your personalities are completely different and this is exactly the source told to Entertainment Tonight.

Entertainment Tonight was not the only one who reported that this celebrity split. People also had a similar report which confirmed the split between Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn and even People noted in their report that it was the differences in their personalities that led to their breakup. But, after they ended their 6-year-long relationship, Taylor Swift seemed as if she had already moved on. It was not long after their breakup that many rumors started to come up regarding Taylor Swift’s new romance with Matty Healy.

But soon the two broke up, as reported because both were extremely busy and realized they're not really compatible with each other," a source tells ET, saying, "Taylor's friends want what's best for her and aren't shocked that their relationship fizzled out since she recently got out of a long-term relationship." TMZ was the first to report the breakup news.

While Swift's The Tortured Poets Department album is suspected to be about her ex, Joe Alwyn, only time will tell what stories unfold within Taylor Swift’s new song.
